Rights group claims hen-house abuse
A Chicago-based animal rights is claiming that laying hens in Merced County are the victims of abuse.
According to Mercy for Animals, hens at least one Merced County "egg barn" are being housed in several-to-a-cage situations and the hens are bruised and mistreated.
The group has released a video that purports to show abuse at the Gemperle Enterprises facility. The company sells eggs to NuCal Foods of Ripon.
The video was apparently shot by an undercover employee.
A representative of the food company says that the release of the video is politically motivated in an attempt to put the issue on the November ballot. Some animal rights advocates are seeking to ask California voters to ban cages in egg-laying facilities.
